Travertine Stone Installation

There is nothing quite like the timeless elegance of a travertine pool deck. For thousands of years, this variety of limestone has been a popular building material. It comes in a variety of hues and tones, ranging from bold shades to more muted grays, creams, and tans. Although you’ll have to pay more for travertine than concrete, it’s still much less expensive than marble or granite. And it’s one of our favorites at Arrowhead Deck and Pools!

Travertine Variations

Natural stone comes in a variety of densities, shapes, and sizes. The color, price, and quality of the stone are largely derived from where the mineral was mined. However, the same mining quarry can still produce some variations. Most of the time, pool decking tiles come from South America or Europe.

Not all stone is created equal. Some regions produce softer stone, which isn’t very long-lasting. It will usually deteriorate after just a few years. Usually, you can spot these kinds of stones based on their price. They’ll be cheaper than their superior alternatives.

The Ultimate Natural Stone for Pool Decking

Because travertine is one of the most porous stones, it allows for drainage. This natural stone is also slip-resistant even when damp. It’s clear why travertine pool decks are such a popular choice!

Another fantastic benefit of travertine is that it can be directly laid on the earth—no concrete foundation needed. To prevent vegetation growth, Arrowhead simply places a sheet down before the travertine. When the soil is ready, we create a base using sand, mortar, crushed stone, or cement. We cement the pavers at the edges and lay them in a pattern of your choice to fit the shape.

Travertine can be susceptible to stains.  Avoid using cleaners that contain vinegar, citric acid, or a similar ingredient if you wish to prolong the life of the installation.  Acids don’t work well with concrete, natural concrete, or polished concrete.  If you use chlorinated tablets in your swimming pool to disinfect it, then you must take great care when working around your deck as the water can eventually begin to turn the materials a different color. Sealants provide a layer of defense against this issue, but it is not a 100% guarantee. With correct care, it can last for several years with little maintenance.
